This image stood out to me for many reasons, amongst a lot of other images that I was looking at. The colour being one of them appealed to me due to the sepia tone effect that is apparent. I think it adds more of an emotion to the image, making the subject look a lot sadder and emotional than if the photograph were to be in colour. This has a huge effect on the way that we look at the image, as it changes our perspective on the person in the image. I also think that the composition of the image, changes the way that we look at it. The fact that the subject is positioned off center and slightly to the left. It makes the audience feel a lot more comfortable looking at the image as it is not as harsh as being directly looked at by the girl in the image. Although the person in the image, is highly engaged with whoever is taking the photograph, or even looking at it, it makes them feel like they know the girl and that they can feel her emotion. This is important to portray in photography as it is a much more subtle way of engaging the audience. I also think that the short depth of field in the image, makes it a lot easier to single out the girl in the photograph as being the main subject in the image. The depth of field in the image, is not however, extremely strong to the point that we can't see what is actually in the background. I think that this is effective as it gives us a sense of location, rather than it simply being set somewhere that we can't identify. This helps us feel more at one with the girl in the photography, which is highly important.
This is my own photograph from one of my exam photoshoots. I am really happy with the way that this photo turned out as I wanted the main focus to be on the eye in the majority of my photographs, with the background being incredibly blurred, creating a short depth of field, so that the background could not be identified. I think that this worked out really well and I especially love the way that the wind in the image, made her hair look all wispy as it gives the image more of a sense of texture, which I think is really effective. I also like the way that the light is falling on her face as it highlights the eye, making it glisten in the sunlight. There is also a lot of light on her eyelashes at the bottom of her eye , which makes them stand out more, making them look longer and fuller. There is also some of the hair obscuring her eye, which gives off a blurred 3 dimensional idea, which adds to the overall look of the photo. I also think that the black and white effect in the image is much more effective than if it were to be in colour because, the eye looks like it is glistening more with the black and white effect on the image.
There are many similarities between the two images, which I think adds to the look of each one individually. Firstly, the fact that neither of the images are in colour, makes them equally as dramatic to an audience. This is something that links the two as they both create very dramatic effects. Another aspect is the depth of field in the image. The background in both of them is blurred to a stage where we can't make out what is actually there, which adds to the drama in the image. Another aspect that is similar between the two, is the way that the subjects are engaging with the camera. They are both staring directly at the camera, looking almost sad and very emotional, which adds to the overall effect that the image is going to have on the audience. These two images are highly effective and work a lot in conjunction with one another.
Connecting Essay 2
This image, created by another photographer, is very capturing to look at. The detail and definition in the images, made me automatically drawn to it. The simple close up of the eyes is very mesmerising to look at and I think that this photographer has managed to capture this person's eyes extremely well. First of all, the black and white effect on the image, really makes the image that little bit more intriguing, which is a highly effective technique. The red channel also looks like it has been decreased more than the others to make particular areas darker than others, which has made particular details a lot more eye capturing. I also think that the shine on the person's eyes makes them much more inviting, which is hard to achieve most of the time. I also think that the way the photographer has managed to make the ring around his iris look a lot darker tan the rest of the eye is very effective and makes the actual eye look a lot brighter. I like the dark effect that the image actually gives off, because although there is clearly a lot of light in the image, some dark techniques have been used to highlight different areas making them more prominent than others. This is something that I think works really well with black and white photography, especially when it is to do with portraiture, or shots like this, focusing on the eyes.
This is my own image, that I think works really well, especially alongside the other image. In this particular image, I like the effect in the actual eyes. The slight black dots on the iris of the eye really stand out with the black and white effect. I wanted to keep this image very light and not as dark as some black and white images tend to be. This was because it thought it looked a lot more effective and it makes the eyes somewhat glow, which adds to the overall look of the image. I think it adds to the image, that the face itself is very light and clear, making the eyes the main focus in the image. The eyes in the image stand out on their own because of the ring flash that lit up the eyes themselves. A this was the main focus of the shot (to capture eyes), I thought that I managed to get the idea down pretty well. The only think that I would say about the image, is that I cut off part of the eyebrows in the image, to make the sizing better in the editing process and I think that it could have looked a lot better if I were to make sure that the eyebrows were still in the image when I was actually shooting. I like the detail in particular in the eyelashes as you can see them all individually.
Both of the images work well together for many reasons. Firstly, the black and white effect on the image works really well with the eyes. It makes the eyes in both of the images, stand out amongst everything else that is going on, which is really important. Both of them are also similar in this respect, that they are mainly focusing on the detail in the eye. I also think that the detail in the hair, such as on the eyebrows and the eyelashes, are very similar in each of the images, connecting them in this detailed way. I also think that the lightness of the skin compared to the darkness in the eyes, is very effective in drawing attention to the eyes. This can be identified in both of the images, which links the two together.
Connecting Essay 3
This image really stood out to me, mainly due to the sepia colour of the image and the brightness of the eyes. I think that the reason the sepia effect works so well in this image, is because of the freckles on her face. The effect makes them stand out on her face and makes them a lot more emphasised on her skin. Her eyes in this image are also very luminous and glowing, which attracts whoever is looking at the image a lot more. The way that the photographer has captured this woman very straight on, looking directly at the camera, makes it look a lot more harsh and as though she is looking directly at the audience. I like the way that her eyelashes are also framing her eyes making them stand out even more. I also think that this photograph is lit in a way that is much more approachable, with all of the light being directed straight onto her face. I think that this makes the image a lot more approachable and easier to look at, which is important when creating a photograph that people can relate to and enjoy looking at. This is why this photograph appealed to me, as there is no aspect of it that would not appeal to an audience, due to the very direct approach that this photographer has taken. I also like the very basic depth of field in the image, that we can see at the top of the image. This again, like the other images that I have looked out, gives more of an idea of location to the image and makes the 3 dimensional idea a lot more apparent, which I think works really nicely with the subject in this photograph.
This is my own image and I think that it is very similar to the image above. I love the sepia effect on the image as I think it really makes the freckles on her face stand out. I think that this makes the image a lot nicer to look at, rather than presenting a very clear and unobscured facial complexion. I also think that the model's expression is very natural and endearing, which would make the audience a lot more likely to feel easy looking at the image. The detail in certain aspects of the image, such as the hair, adds to the texture in the image which I think is important. I also like the cropping of the image, with the top and bottom of the models face, being cropped so that a lot of the focus is on the center of her face. The overall look with the HDR effect emphasising the freckles on her face, along with the sepia toned effect, makes the image stand out a lot more and adds more detail to the image as a whole. I also really like how you can see the ring flash in her eye as it adds more dimension to the image which I really like. It also makes her eyes look like that a lot brighter and shiny than they actually are, which I thought was highly effective.
The two images are very similar to one another. The first image is very similar to the second in the fact that the detail in the image extremely highlights the freckles on the girls face. This makes all of the rest of the details on their faces stand out a lot more. Prominent features such as the nose, mouth and the eyes still stand out on the face because of this. I especially think that the sepia effect in both of the images work really well with the HDR effect that is given off in both of the images, which helps the shimmer in the eye stand out more than if this effect were not apparent. The brightness that I added to the second image corroborates with the first image as it makes the colours in the image a lot more interesting to look at.
Connecting Essay 4
This image stood out to me a lot, mainly due to the detail that we can clearly see on the shell. This is emphasised by the black and white effect that is apparent in the image. I like how the photographer has decided to photograph this particular subject from this angle as it makes aspects such as the ridges and specific details a lot more prominent in the image. The black and white effect overall makes the shadows and highlights look a lot brighter, which in turn makes the emphasis that the image has a lot more intriguing. The lighting of the image, with some lights clearly pointing directly over the top o the subject, make the bottom half of the image darker than the top half, which works really well. The slight depth of field in the image, gives the audience a 3 dimensional feel, making the front of the shell look a lot larger than it probably should be. With regards to lighting there is also some sort of light positioned on the left hand side of the subject as the right hand side is much darker than the rest of the image, which again adds to the 3 dimensional feel of the image and also gives us a sense of how big the shell actually is.
This is my own image of a shell from a very basic point of view. The image is taken from a high angle, looking directly over the shell to get the detail that we want to see. I decided to shoot from this angle so that I could see the ridges and the detail on the shell. I used simple lighting to get this image, placing two lights directly over the shell, slightly to either side so that I could light the entire subject. This worked out really well, especially with the black and white effect that I later added. The black and white technique, much like in the other image, makes the ridges on the shell stand out a lot more that if the image were to be in full colour. This is something that I wanted to be prominent as it is what a lot of people are going to be most drawn to when looking at the image. I also liked the way that in this image, the ridges nearer to the top of the shell are a lot darker than the rest as it emphasises the lighter aspects of the shell, such as the edges. The black background also worked well in the image, as it brought more attention to the lighter subject. The detail on the shell is very eye capturing and intriguing and it draws an audience in from the moment they look at the image.
Both of the images have many similarities that connect the images. One aspect would be the black and white technique used, designed to increase the detail in the images, mainly for the ridges on the shell. This is important so that more of the attention from the audience is drawn to this particular aspect. I think that both of these images corroborate in this way as the lighting and black and white effect, increasing and decreasing the shadows and highlights, make the details in the images stand out a lot more than if this effect wasn't to be used. They also work well together as they are both close enough so that you can really see the detail on the shells. As this is obviously the most important part of the image, both of them have been photographed well in order to capture this.
Connecting Essay 5
This image really stood out to me, due to the bright green colour in the image, with the very simple white background and clear glass. This was the first thing that stood out to me as it is obviously meant to be the focal point of the image. This is definitely the effect that it gives off, which is really important, especially for the photographer when getting his idea across. The bright lighting in this image, putting a lot of emphasis on the colour in the image, is another aspect that I think that the photographer has though out really well. The green droplets in the image, dispersing throughout the water, is highly effective, especially because it looks as though they have been very cleanly dropped into the water. There is no sign of corruption int he water which makes it even more intriguing. I think that the way that the photographer has managed to make it look as though the bottom of the glass is glowing is interesting because it emphasises the green in the glass. I also think that the black areas in the image, mainly at the top of the water and in the corners of the thickest part of green adds more dimension to the image. This is another aspect that I think the photographer has done really well and managed to add to the image in a very subtle way.
This is my own image in corroboration with the other image. I particular like this image that I got as It thought that the very simple droplet looked like it was almost hovering above the pink haze at the bottom of the glass/image. This worked out really well, despite it not being initially what I was going for. Even so, I think that it has worked well and has made the blob stand out a lot more in the image. I also quite like the fact that there are a few water droplets at the top of the glass to give a slight dimension to the image. I also think that the black on the side of the glass adds to the 3 dimensional idea that we know to be true with a glass. All of these aspects together work really well in the image, making the pink droplet blob stand out as the focal point.
Both of the images work well together because they show colour and how they disperse when they touch the water. I think that they are extremely similar in the fact that they show this, however the colours are obviously different. They are also similar in the way that the black areas forms in the corner of the thickest part of colour. I think that this is highly effective and further adds dimension to the image. Another aspect is the very plain background and the clear glass, which is apparent in both of the images, which in turn, draws more attention towards the pink and green areas in the images.
